The story

Malta International Food Festival in Mdina ditch

The Malta International Food Festival launched in 2015 in the Mdina Ditch, the former defensive moat surrounding the walled city, and grew from around 5,000 visitors to nearly 48,000 by 2023. Professional chefs prepare dishes from six global cuisines, American, Asian, Italian, Spanish, Arabic and Maltese, alongside live cooking demonstrations and traditional Maltese food and desserts.

Mdina's ditch was never meant to host a festival.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Staging a major food festival inside the Mdina Ditch, a fortified moat converted into a public garden in 2013 that separates the medieval Silent City from Rabat, gives the event an atmospheric, enclosed setting unlike any conventional festival ground, with centuries-old fortification walls rising around the crowd on every side

02

The mystery stays covered

Covering six distinct global cuisines within a single festival, rather than focusing purely on Maltese food, also gives visitors a genuinely international culinary tour condensed into one location, backed by live cooking demonstrations that let chefs explain technique directly to the crowd
