Festival des Dattes d'Atar in Atar
Each year in late July or August, the oasis town of Atar becomes the heart of Mauritania's date harvest during the Festival International des Dattes de Mauritanie, known locally as Guetna. Organized by the Ministry of Agriculture under the high patronage of the President of the Republic, in partnership with the UAE's Khalifa International Award, the festival draws families and traders from the Adrar, Tagant, Assaba and western Hodh regions for weeks of feasting and exchange.
Each summer, as the date palms of the Adrar region ripen under the desert sun, the town of Atar fills with a quiet, purposeful energy that Mauritanians simply call Guetna.
