The story

Feria Internacional del Mezcal in Oaxaca City

The Feria Internacional del Mezcal runs for roughly ten days each July at Oaxaca City's Centro Cultural y de Convenciones, overlapping with the Guelaguetza season. More than a hundred mezcal producers and artisans from across the state gather to pour tastings, sell bottles, and present workshops on production methods, giving visitors a concentrated look at the spirit that defines Oaxaca's identity.

Mezcal has become one of Mexico's most internationally recognized spirits over the past two decades, but its production in Oaxaca remains rooted in small, often family-run palenques that distill roasted agave using methods passed down across generations of Zapotec and Mixtec communities.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Oaxaca produces the large majority of Mexico's mezcal, made by small palenques that distill agave using methods passed down through generations of Zapotec and Mixtec families, and this fair is the state's largest single gathering of that industry under one roof

02

The mystery stays covered

Producers from every mezcal-growing region of Oaxaca set up stalls to pour tastings of espadin, tobala, and other agave varieties, often explaining the specific terroir and roasting technique behind each bottle

03

The city starts moving

Running alongside the Guelaguetza dance festival gives the fair a built-in audience of domestic and international visitors already in the city, and its scale, drawing well over a hundred brands, makes it one of the few places to compare small-batch mezcal from dozens of villages side by side
