Apple Fair Zacatlan in Zacatlan

The Feria de la Manzana, or Apple Fair, has celebrated the harvest in the Puebla mountain town of Zacatlan since 1941, timed each August around the August 15 feast of the Virgin of the Assumption, patron saint of the region's fruit growers. Apple cultivation here dates to 1575, introduced by Franciscan friars, and the modern fair combines a religious mass and procession with stalls selling the town's 18 apple varieties and apple-based products like cider and sweets.

Apples are not native to Mexico, but in Zacatlan, a Puebla highland town whose name is now inseparable from the fruit, they have grown for nearly 450 years.
