Kumari Jatra in Kathmandu

Kumari Jatra is the chariot procession of Kathmandu's Royal Kumari, the living goddess, held alongside Indra Jatra over three days each September. Three chariots, carrying representations of Kumari, Ganesh and Bhairava, are pulled through different quarters of the old city, with the president of Nepal receiving a tika blessing from the Kumari in a ceremony that continues a role once performed by the reigning king.

The institution of the Kumari, Nepal's living goddess, is first recorded in an inscription from 1280, though its most widely told founding story dates to the reign of King Jaya Prakash Malla in the eighteenth century.
