Vlaggetjesdag Scheveningen in Scheveningen
Vlaggetjesdag, or Flag Day, is Scheveningen's traditional celebration marking the arrival of the season's first Hollandse Nieuwe herring, historically tied to the herring fleet's return. Held each early summer, the harbor fills with flag-decorated fishing boats, a herring auction, market stalls and family entertainment celebrating the Dutch fishing town's maritime heritage.
Scheveningen has been one of the Netherlands' most significant fishing harbors for centuries, and Vlaggetjesdag, literally Flag Day, exists to commemorate the moment that once mattered most in that fishing calendar: the return of the herring fleet carrying the season's first catch of Hollandse Nieuwe, the lightly salted young herring considered a genuine Dutch delicacy.
