The story

Auckland Lantern Festival in Auckland

The BNZ Auckland Lantern Festival marks the close of Chinese Lunar New Year with hundreds of illuminated lanterns, food stalls, and fireworks over several nights at Manukau Sports Bowl. Free to attend since its 2000 debut at Albert Park, it has grown into one of New Zealand's largest cultural community festivals, shifting venue and zodiac theme as it has expanded.

When the Asia New Zealand Foundation and Auckland City Council staged the first Auckland Lantern Festival in Albert Park in 2000, it was conceived as a modest one-day celebration to mark the end of the two-week Lunar New Year period, with lanterns shipped over from Singapore for the occasion.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Launched in 2000 by the Asia New Zealand Foundation with lanterns imported from Singapore, the festival opened Auckland's Albert Park to 40,000 visitors on its first outing and has since relocated twice, first to Auckland Domain, then to Manukau Sports Bowl, to accommodate crowds now exceeding 100,000 across a long weekend

02

The mystery stays covered

Each edition centres on the incoming Chinese zodiac animal, with more than 500 handmade lanterns, some specially commissioned from artisans, alongside cultural performances, street food, and a smoke-free, alcohol-free atmosphere designed for families

03

The city starts moving

Free shuttle buses connect the venue to Manukau train station, and entry tickets double as public transport passes for the weekend
