The story

Pasifika Festival Auckland in Auckland

Pasifika Festival brings eight cultural villages representing eleven Pacific nations, plus Tangata Whenua, to Western Springs Lakeside Park each March. Founded in 1993 and now drawing crowds well over 100,000 across a weekend, it is widely described as the largest festival of its kind anywhere, with free entry, traditional performance, craft, and food from across the Pacific.

In February 1991, Roy Vaughan, then secretary of the South Pacific Forum, proposed a festival that could bring Auckland's growing Pacific communities together in one place rather than scattering their celebrations across separate, smaller events.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Pasifika grew from a proposal by South Pacific Forum secretary Roy Vaughan into a community day that drew 30,000 people in its first year, 1993, and has since expanded into a two-day festival with distinct national villages, Cook Islands, Niue, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Tuvalu, and more, standing alongside an Aotearoa village representing Tangata Whenua

02

The mystery stays covered

Each village runs its own stage of traditional and contemporary performance, from Samoan siva to Maori haka, plus craft demonstrations such as Tongan tapa cloth making and Cook Islands quilting

03

The city starts moving

The festival has weathered a 2015 fruit-fly relocation, a 2019 cancellation after the Christchurch mosque attacks, and a COVID-19 cancellation in 2020, and Auckland's mayor has specifically exempted it from council arts-funding cuts
