The story

Whangarei Fritter Festival in Whangarei

Started in 2013 by Whangarei District Council to build an iconic summer event around New Zealand's humble fried fritter, the Whangarei Fritter Festival, now also branded the Northland Fritter Festival, returned to Semenoff Stadium in March 2025 as its tenth edition after a three-year pandemic-driven absence.

The Whangarei Fritter Festival, now also branded the Northland Fritter Festival, began in 2013 out of a very specific problem: Whangarei District Council's events team had a new stadium to fill and wanted a strategy to attract visitors and build the city's reputation as a destination, but lacked an obvious signature event to build it around.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The event's origin is unusually deliberate: council event planners looking to fill a new stadium and build the city's visitor appeal chose the fritter specifically because it felt truly unique and quintessentially Northland, rather than importing a food theme from elsewhere

02

The mystery stays covered

Cancelled at short notice in 2020 due to COVID-19, with a scaled-down Backyard Fritter event as a substitute, the festival was then absent for three years before its celebrated return in March 2025, when it was opened by performers from Whangārei Boys' High School and billed as the tenth Fritter Festival since 2013
