The story

Festival de las Rosquillas Somoto in Somoto

Somoto and neighboring Yalaguina jointly host the Festival de las Rosquillas each August, a one-day celebration of the ring-shaped corn and cheese pastry that more than a hundred family workshops in the two towns bake and sell as their main livelihood. The festival pairs tastings with a float parade and a coffee and gastronomy fair.

In the dry hills of Madriz department, along Nicaragua's northern border with Honduras, the towns of Somoto and Yalaguina share a culinary identity built around a single humble pastry.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Rosquillas are not a novelty snack in Somoto and Yalaguina, they are an economic backbone: more than a hundred small businesses across the two adjoining Madriz municipalities depend on rosquilla production, and the festival exists specifically to recognize the largely female workforce that hand-shapes and bakes them in wood-fired clay ovens

02

The mystery stays covered

Now past its tenth edition, the event rotates emphasis between the two towns while keeping a shared identity, pairing a parade of floats through Somoto's streets with a coffee demonstration fair and gastronomic exhibits, so visitors sample rosquillas alongside the coffee that also anchors the wider Segovias economy
