The story

Artas Lettuce Festival in Artas

The Artas Lettuce Festival is an annual event held each spring in the village of Artas near Bethlehem, organized by the Artas Folklore Center since 1994. The festival celebrates the local lettuce harvest with produce sales, dabke folk dancing, and displays connected to the center's folklore museum, aimed at both local residents and visitors interested in traditional Palestinian village life.

Artas lies in a valley just south of Bethlehem, close to the site traditionally associated with Solomon's Pools, and has been the subject of unusually detailed outside documentation since the Finnish anthropologist Hilma Granqvist lived in and studied the village between 1925 and 1931, publishing her findings over several decades afterward.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Artas is one of the most extensively documented Palestinian villages, thanks in part to the early twentieth-century ethnographic work of Hilma Granqvist, and the Lettuce Festival grew out of that same impulse to record and share local tradition

02

The mystery stays covered

Founded in 1994 by the Artas Folklore Center, established a year earlier by Musa Sanad, the festival pairs the village's lettuce harvest with dabke performances by a resident troupe and access to a small folklore museum

03

The city starts moving

Unlike a one-off cultural showcase, it functions as a fixed annual date on Artas's calendar, and its consistent format around a single named crop sets it apart from broader, unstructured harvest gatherings found in other West Bank villages
