Palestine Independence Day Celebrations in Ramallah
Palestine Independence Day, observed November 15, marks the anniversary of the 1988 Palestinian Declaration of Independence proclaimed by the Palestine Liberation Organization in Algiers. In Ramallah, the Palestinian Authority's de facto administrative center, the day is marked with official ceremonies, flag displays, and speeches at government sites including the Muqata'a presidential compound.
On November 15, 1988, meeting in Algiers rather than in any part of historic Palestine, the Palestine National Council heard Yasser Arafat proclaim the Declaration of Independence of the State of Palestine, a document asserting statehood over territory that remained, and largely remains, under Israeli control or administration.
