The story

Taybeh Oktoberfest in Taybeh

Taybeh Oktoberfest, also called the Taybeh Beer Festival, is an annual October celebration launched in 2005 by the Taybeh Brewery in the all-Christian Palestinian village of Taybeh, north of Jerusalem. It combines the brewery's beer and wine with Palestinian food, dabke dancing, and craft stalls in a Bavarian-style street festival format.

Taybeh is a small village in the hills north of Jerusalem, notable for being the last town in Palestine whose population remains entirely Christian.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Taybeh Brewery, founded in 1994 by brothers Nadim and David Khoury, was the first Palestinian brewery and the first microbrewery anywhere in the Middle East, predating Israel's first microbrewery by roughly a decade

02

The mystery stays covered

Its Oktoberfest, launched in 2005, transplants the German beer-festival format into a small West Bank village that is itself unusual: Taybeh is the last entirely Christian town remaining in Palestine

03

The city starts moving

The festival pairs Taybeh's beer and, since 2012, its estate wine with Palestinian dabke dance performances, local food stalls, and folk music, making it as much a showcase of Palestinian Christian village life and small-scale industry as a beer festival in the German sense

Six Munich breweries

Beer rule

Only Munich breweries may pour at the Wiesn, which keeps the beer local rather than generic.

Tents and benches

Gathering

The core ritual is sharing long tables, brass bands, roasted chicken, pretzels, and rounds of beer.

Theresienwiese

Place

The festival still belongs to Munich's fairground meadow, named for the royal wedding that started it.

Folk fair

Rhythm

Rides, parades, dress, food stalls, and family days keep it a Bavarian folk festival, not only a beer event.
