Festival de la Cultura Afroantillana in Panama City/Colon
Festival de la Cultura Afroantillana celebrates the heritage of Panama's Afro-Antillean community, descendants of English-speaking Caribbean laborers from Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad who came to build the Panama Railroad and Canal, through music, food and dress in Panama City and Colon.
Panama's Afro-Antillean community traces its roots to a specific, well-documented wave of migration: tens of thousands of laborers from Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad and other English-speaking Caribbean islands who came to the isthmus first for the Panama Railroad in the 1850s and then, in far greater numbers, for the French and American canal-building efforts between the 1880s and 1914.
