Festival do Contrabando reenacts the historic cross-border smuggling trade between Alcoutim in Portugal and Sanlucar de Guadiana in Spain, with boats crossing the Guadiana River, period costume and a shared market linking the two towns for a weekend each March. It is scheduled for the last Friday and weekend of March.

For most of its history, the border dividing Alcoutim from its Spanish neighbor Sanlucar de Guadiana was less a hard line than a suggestion.
