Festa da Ria Formosa turns Largo de Sao Francisco in Faro into an eleven-night seafood party each summer, honouring the lagoon system that shapes the Algarve coastline. Now in its 30th edition, it serves shrimp, spider crab, clams and cataplana-style dishes alongside free nightly live music and demonstrations of traditional shellfish gathering.

The Ria Formosa is not a single beach or bay but a sixty-kilometre chain of barrier islands, salt marshes and tidal channels stretching along the eastern Algarve, and it functions as one of the most productive shellfish nurseries in Europe.
