Festival del Apio in Barranquitas
Festival del Apio, held each April or May in Barranquitas, celebrates the town's celery crop, a signature product of Puerto Rico's central mountain region. Barranquitas, birthplace of statesman Luis Munoz Rivera, is also known for its decades-old National Crafts Fair and its June patron saint festival.
In the mountains of central Puerto Rico, in a municipality known as much for its political history as its scenery, Barranquitas holds an annual festival dedicated to a single, unglamorous but locally significant crop: apio, or celery.
