The story

Festival del Fricase in Naranjito

Naranjito's Festival del Fricasé fills the town's Plaza de Recreo each spring with the smell of slow-cooked stew. Municipal cooks prepare a giant communal chicken fricasé served free to the crowd, while food kiosks sell turkey, goat, pork, and veal versions of the same braised dish, backed by live music, artisan stalls, and agricultural vendors.

Fricasé is not a showpiece dish in most Puerto Rican kitchens.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The centerpiece is a fricasé cooked in a single giant pot by municipal CADAL-program employees and given away free to everyone who attends, an unusual civic gesture rarely seen at Puerto Rico's other food festivals

02

The mystery stays covered

Around that free communal dish, independent kiosks compete to reinterpret the same stew with turkey, goat, veal, and pork, turning one recipe into a full tasting circuit

03

The city starts moving

The event also functions as a showcase for local farmers and agronomists, tying a comfort-food tradition directly to the municipality's agricultural producers
