Festival del Pastel Puertorriqueno in Orocovis
Orocovis hosts the Puerto Rican National Meat Pie Festival each November, dedicated to pasteles, the masa-and-meat dish wrapped in banana leaves that is a staple of Puerto Rican holiday cooking. The festival gives a labor-intensive home-kitchen tradition its own public showcase in a town already known island-wide for its food-focused civic calendar.
In most Puerto Rican households, pasteles are not something you buy; they are something a family makes together, usually in a single marathon kitchen session sometime before Christmas, with relatives dividing the labor of grating green bananas and root vegetables into masa, seasoning and browning the meat filling, and folding and tying dozens of banana-leaf packets destined for the freezer.
