MahanFest Kalmyk Meat Gastronomy Festival in Elista
MahanFest celebrates Kalmyk cuisine's meat-centered traditions each spring at Elista's Marco Polo ecopark, bringing together chefs from Kalmykia, Buryatia and Tuva for cooking demonstrations and a Taste of Kalmykia competition. The gastronomic festival pairs tastings of traditional dishes with performances by Kalmyk artists, a craft fair and hands-on cooking master classes for both adults and children.
Kalmykia is an unusual place on the map of European Russia: a traditionally Buddhist republic settled by descendants of Mongolic nomads who migrated west centuries ago, its steppe landscape and its cuisine both owing far more to Central Asian herding traditions than to anything typically associated with the surrounding Russian regions.
