World Dumpling Day Udmurtia in Izhevsk
World Dumpling Day in Udmurtia is a food-culture celebration built around the republic's claim to be the linguistic birthplace of the pelmen, since the Udmurt word pelnyan, literally bread ear, is widely cited as the root of the Russian word pelmeni. Izhevsk has hosted festival editions promoting this culinary heritage claim.
Pelmeni are eaten across Russia and much of the former Russian Empire, but Udmurtia has built a food-tourism identity around a linguistic claim to their origin: the standard Russian word pelmeni is widely traced to the Komi-Permyak and Udmurt compound pel nyan, meaning ear of bread, describing the pinched, ear-shaped dumpling of chopped meat wrapped in unleavened dough.
