The story

Kostroma Cheese Festival in Kostroma

The Kostroma Cheese Festival celebrates the region's long dairy tradition each July on the Volga embankment near the Ivan Susanin monument, close to the aptly named Milk Mountain Street. Cheesemakers from Kostroma and neighboring regions sell and sample their wares alongside cheese-based street food, from fried cheese to cheese ice cream, backed by concerts and cooking demonstrations.

Cheese has been serious business in Kostroma since long before anyone thought to build a festival around it.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What distinguishes this festival is how directly it draws on Kostroma's genuine standing as one of Russia's historic dairy centers, a reputation dating back well over a century to when Kostroma cheese became a recognized brand across the empire

02

The mystery stays covered

Rather than a generic food fair, the event is built entirely around that legacy, bringing in producers from the city's own districts as well as neighboring Yaroslavl, Ivanovo, Vladimir and Moscow regions to sell and demonstrate their craft side by side

03

The city starts moving

Organizers lean into playful extremes to make the point, including efforts to set records for enormous batches of traditional Kostroma merchant-style cheese soup, and an ever-expanding menu of cheese-flavored novelties, from cheese pancakes to cheese-scented coffee, that push the region's signature product into unexpected territory
