Krapivna Nettle Festival in Krapivna
Krapivna, a historic Tula Oblast village that lost its town status in 1928, has hosted an annual International Nettle Festival since 2002. The village carries a direct Leo Tolstoy connection, since he served as magistrate for Krapivensky Uezd, the district that once administratively included his own Yasnaya Polyana estate.
Krapivna sits quietly in Tula Oblast today as a village rather than a town, having lost official town status in 1928, but its more than one hundred seventy surviving historic buildings tell a different story of a place that once mattered considerably more than its current size suggests.
