Igloo City of Eskimos Festival in Novosibirsk
Since 2008, Novosibirsk has hosted teams who spend a single February day competing to build the best igloo, the traditional snow dwelling of Arctic peoples, on one open site in the city. What began informally shifted to a competitive format in 2016 and has since grown into what organizers describe as the largest igloo-building festival in the world.
Novosibirsk has no Arctic coastline and no historical Eskimo population of its own, which makes it an odd host city for a festival built entirely around igloo construction, and yet the mismatch is precisely what has let the event become what organizers now call the largest igloo-building festival in the world.
