Hyperborea Winter Festival in Petrozavodsk
Named for the mythical land beyond the north wind that ancient Greek writers placed somewhere near Karelia, Hyperborea has become Petrozavodsk's marquee winter event each February. Snow and ice sculptors compete on a set theme, while craft fairs, folk concerts, and winter sports shows fill the Lake Onega shoreline for what recent editions mark as a twenty-fifth-anniversary celebration.
Ancient Greek writers who never came anywhere near Karelia still left it a legend: Hyperborea, the land beyond Boreas, the north wind, where some accounts described a people living in perpetual light and comfort at the edge of the known world.
