The Taman Peninsula juts into the strait between the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, a strategic and fertile stretch of land that ancient Greek colonists recognized more than two thousand years ago when they founded Hermonassa and other settlements there as part of the broader Bosporan Kingdom.
