Khonk-Fest Wild Garlic Gastronomy Festival in Vedeno
Honk-Fest is a gastronomic festival in Chechnya's mountainous Vedensky District dedicated entirely to wild garlic, known locally as cheremsha, held each February and drawing more than ten thousand visitors in recent years. Roughly two tons of the pungent wild herb are prepared into various dishes for tasting, alongside exhibitions, competitions and performances tied to a regional mountain-districts development initiative.
In the mountains of Chechnya's Vedensky District, late winter brings the first shoots of cheremsha, a wild garlic that pushes up through the melting snow before almost anything else in the local landscape.
