Kosidba na Rajcu in Ljig

Kosidba na Rajcu traces back to 1892, when the first scythe-mowing competition and folk fair was held on Rajac hill near Ljig, and now runs as an internationally attended event judged on speed, quality, width and evenness of cutting. Alongside the mowing contest, a costumed competitor called a djidija or kozbasa is chosen for standout appearance, song and dance.

Before mechanized farming reached rural Serbia, cutting hay by hand with a scythe, a practice called kosidba, was simply how meadows got harvested, a skill every farming family needed and most rural men and women possessed.
