Cabbage Festival Mrcajevci in Mrcajevci
Kupusijada in Mrcajevci village near Cacak has run since 2002 as a three-day competition centered on svadbarski kupus, wedding cabbage, cooked in large earthen pots layered with sour cabbage and mixed meats. Held the third weekend of September, categories range from individual and team cooks to a whole-village cooking contest, with past attempts at record-setting pot sizes.
Svadbarski kupus, wedding cabbage, earned its name from its traditional role at Serbian weddings, where families cooked enormous quantities of the dish, layers of sour cabbage with beef, pork, and mutton, seasoned with paprika, bay leaf, and garlic, in large earthen pots to feed guests across days of celebration.
