The story

Ficksburg Cherry Festival in Ficksburg

The Ficksburg Cherry Festival is South Africa's oldest crop festival, held every November in the Eastern Free State town known as the Cherry Capital of the World. Launched in 1968 by the local Jaycees, the three-day event marks the cherry harvest with a street parade, farm tours and family entertainment, drawing around 30,000 visitors to a highveld town built largely from sandstone.

In 1905, a year after a local farmer named Harry Pickston wrote to German missionaries in South Africa asking about growing cherries, the first trees, including the Giant Heidelfinger, Elton, Early Red, Early River and Bing varieties, went into the ground on a farm called Platkop near Ficksburg, in the eastern Free State.

01

The place changes

Ficksburg has grown cherries since 1905, when a local farmer contacted German missionaries about the crop and the first Giant Heidelfinger and Bing trees went into the ground on the nearby farm Platkop

02

The mystery stays covered

the surrounding district now holds more than 500 hectares of orchards

03

The city starts moving

The festival that grew out of that harvest, first run by the town's Jaycees in 1968, is billed as the oldest crop festival in the country and still centers on cherries rather than a generic craft market: orchard tours where visitors pick their own fruit, a cherry mampoer distilling competition, and cherry-and-chocolate pairings sit alongside the sandstone architecture that gives the town its other nickname, and heritage steam train rides at nearby Sandstone Estate
