Negombo Lagoon Festival in Negombo
Negombo's lagoon fishing communities hold a summer gathering, loosely referred to as a beach or fishermen's festival, featuring boat races, net-casting displays and fresh lagoon catch sold from shoreline stalls. It celebrates the mangrove-fringed lagoon that has sustained outrigger canoe fishing families for generations.
Negombo Lagoon is a wide estuarine system on Sri Lanka's western coast, fringed by some of the country's most diverse mangrove stands and central to the livelihoods of the fishing communities that ring its banks.
