The story

Dahu Strawberry Culture Festival in Dahu

Dahu's strawberry season, more precisely called the Dahu Strawberry Culture Season in official Chinese branding, runs from roughly late November through spring around Provincial Highway 3, marking Taiwan's best-known strawberry region since commercial planting began there in 1958. Visitors pick their own strawberries at farm orchards and buy processed products such as jam and strawberry wine.

Dahu's strawberry identity started small: in 1958, three farmers, Lai Yun-tian, Chen Shi-yuan, and Wu Shi-jin, planted roughly 0.4 hectares after Lai saw strawberries growing on a relative's land and decided to try the crop himself.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Dahu's strawberry industry began in 1958 when farmers Lai Yun-tian, Chen Shi-yuan, and Wu Shi-jin planted a small plot after seeing strawberries grown by a relative

02

The mystery stays covered

U-pick tourism took off in 1976 when other farmers opened orchards directly to visitors along Highway 3, and by 1982 Dahu had Taiwan's first government-recognized tourist strawberry orchard

03

The city starts moving

Today the season includes a themed charity marathon along the scenic Highway 3 route and products from the local Dahu Farm winery, which makes strawberry wine, an uncommon product elsewhere in Taiwan
