The story

Taoyuan Longgang Rice Noodle Festival in Longgang

The Taoyuan Longgang Rice Noodle Festival celebrates the Yunnanese and Dai-Burmese heritage of Longgang, a Zhongli District neighborhood settled by families resettled from the Yunnan-Burma border region after Republic of China troops retreated there in the mid-twentieth century. The festival centers on mi-gan, the community's distinctive rice noodle dish, alongside food stalls and ethnic minority cultural performances.

In the Longgang neighborhood of Taoyuan's Zhongli District, a rice noodle dish tells the story of an unusual and little-known chapter of Taiwan's modern history.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Longgang is one of Taiwan's most concentrated communities of ethnic Yunnanese and Dai descendants, tracing back to soldiers of the Republic of China's 93rd Division who, after retreating from Yunnan into northern Burma and Thailand following the Chinese Civil War, were eventually resettled in Taiwan along with their families starting in the 1950s and 1960s, giving the neighborhood a nickname as Taiwan's Little Yunnan or Little Burma

02

The mystery stays covered

The rice noodle festival showcases food and culture found almost nowhere else on the island, including mi-gan served in a savory broth distinct from mainstream Taiwanese noodle dishes, alongside Yunnan-Burmese specialties like betel flower salad and Burmese-style curries, plus Dai ethnic minority dance performances
