The story

Taiwan International Balloon Festival in Luye Highland

The Taiwan International Balloon Festival fills the skies above Luye Highland in Taitung County with mass hot-air balloon ascents each summer, running from roughly June through August since its 2011 launch. Sunrise flights, illuminated night-glow shows and specialty shaped balloons draw visitors to the Rift Valley for one of Taiwan's most photographed outdoor events.

Before 2011, Luye Highland was known mainly to paragliders, a plateau of tea terraces in Taitung County's Rift Valley whose steady thermal winds and open sightlines made it one of Taiwan's better launch sites for the sport.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Luye Highland's tea-terraced plateau, overlooking the Rift Valley between the Central Mountain Range and the Coastal Mountain Range, provides an unusually scenic launch site rarely matched by other Asian balloon festivals, and the event's extended summer-long run, rather than a single weekend, lets visitors plan around specific themed weekends and specialty shaped balloons

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival helped transform Taitung, previously one of Taiwan's less-visited counties, into a major domestic tourism draw, credited with substantially boosting the region's summer visitor numbers since it began
