Kerkennah Octopus Festival in Kerkennah Islands
On Tunisia's Kerkennah Islands, the Octopus Festival celebrates the archipelago's signature catch and its centerpiece dish, octopus couscous. Timed to coincide with the November fishing season, when the octopus catch peaks, the event has evolved into a gastronomy-focused Culinary Route of the Octopus, combining cooking demonstrations and tastings with conservation talks addressing the pressures climate change and overfishing place on Kerkennah's traditional fisheries.
The Kerkennah Islands, a low-lying archipelago off Tunisia's Sfax coast, have built their identity around the sea in a way few places can match, and no creature captures that relationship better than the octopus.
