The story

Alacati Herb Festival in Alacati

The Alacati Herb Festival celebrates the Aegean coastal town's wild greens tradition every April, filling its stone-house town center for four days with cooking demonstrations, herb-gathering excursions and market stalls selling dishes made from more than a hundred varieties of foraged wild plants gathered from the surrounding hills.

Alacati built its modern reputation on stone-house architecture and windsurfing, but long before either drew tourists to this stretch of the Aegean coast, its home cooks were quietly sustaining a foraging tradition tied to the specific microclimate of the hills around the town.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Established in 2010 specifically to keep alive a foraging tradition that was fading as younger generations moved away from the practice, the festival centers on the more than 125 wild edible and medicinal plants that grow in the hills around Alacati, collectively called ot in Turkish, including radika, sevketi bostan, arapsaci, mustard greens and wild fennel

02

The mystery stays covered

Unlike a general food festival, its programming is organized specifically around foraging and home-cooking traditions, with seminars, cooking competitions and guided herb-gathering excursions into the surrounding countryside alongside stalls selling thyme honey, lavender-flower paste and nettle bread
