The story

Istanbul Coffee Festival in Istanbul

Launched in 2014 at the historic Galata Rum Ilkokulu, the Istanbul Coffee Festival was Turkey's first dedicated coffee festival and has since relocated through the former Haydarpasa train station and Kucuk Ciftlik Park, combining tastings, roastery showcases, barista competitions, and industry talks across cumulative attendance organizers put above 500,000.

When organizers decided in 2013 to launch Turkey's first dedicated coffee festival, they picked an unlikely venue: Galata Rum Ilkokulu, a historic Greek primary school in Karakoy, for an event pitched under the tagline Istanbul Buram Buram Kahve Kokacak, roughly, Istanbul will smell thick with coffee.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival hosted the Specialty Coffee Association's Turkey Championships from 2014 to 2019 and created its own Barista Clash competition, positioning it as an industry event as much as a public one

02

The mystery stays covered

Its venue history is part of its identity: the 2015 edition at Haydarpasa Gari was reportedly one of the last major public events held in the historic train station before restoration work closed it

03

The city starts moving

Beyond the festival weekend itself, the organizing team built out a wider coffee-culture brand, including a printed festival newspaper, Istanbul and Turkey coffee guides, a mobile coffee caravan called Bean on Wheel, and a B2B-focused Istanbul Coffee Summit launched in 2021
