The story

Urla Artichoke Festival in Urla

Each April, Urla celebrates sakiz enginari, its indigenous globe artichoke variety, with a festival centered on Cumhuriyet Meydani. Running since around 2015, the event combines producer stalls, cooking demonstrations, academic panels, and international chef appearances aimed at both preserving a local crop and building gastro-tourism around it.

Every April, the cobblestone streets around Urla's Cumhuriyet Meydani fill with the smell of a very specific vegetable: sakiz enginari, a globe artichoke variety native to the Izmir region and, for one weekend, the reason the whole town turns out.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival is explicitly tied to an economic development goal: former Urla mayor Sibel Uyar credited it with helping lift local artichoke production to an estimated 35 million pieces annually and raising producer income by roughly 275 percent over five years

02

The mystery stays covered

Programming reflects that ambition, drawing international chefs from countries including Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Italy, France, and Lebanon to demonstrate artichoke-based dishes, alongside academic panels that have featured historian Ilber Ortayli and archaeologist Hayat Erkanal

03

The city starts moving

The featured crop, sakiz enginari, is a variety specific to the Izmir region, giving the festival a genuine agricultural identity rather than a generic food-fair theme
