The story

Jinja Fish Festival in Jinja

The Jinja Fish Festival is an annual two-day celebration of Uganda's fish industry, held at Across the Nile Resort in Njeru Municipality near Jinja. Past its seventh edition in December 2025, it combines fish-cuisine cookoffs, cultural exhibitions, sustainability and conservation awareness, and live entertainment, and is typically paired with the Lake Victoria Marathon.

The Jinja Fish Festival grew out of a partnership between Uganda's Directorate of Fisheries, the Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization, national fishing and fish-processing associations, and international development funding through the GIZ Responsible Fisheries Business Chain project, with academic backing from Makerere University's Department of Zoology and Entomology.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival is distinguished by its direct link to Uganda's fisheries policy and industry rather than being a purely commercial food event: it is organized with funding from the GIZ Responsible Fisheries Business Chain project and a national committee including the Directorate of Fisheries, the Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization, fishing and processing associations, and Makerere University's Department of Zoology and Entomology

02

The mystery stays covered

That backing shapes the program: alongside fresh fish cookoffs, live DJs, and artist performances, the festival runs conservation activities and sustainability messaging tied to Lake Victoria's fish stocks, and pairs the celebration with the Lake Victoria Marathon, linking food culture directly to environmental and public-health goals around one of Africa's largest lakes
