The story

Kinetic Grand Championship in Arcata

The Kinetic Grand Championship is a three-day, human-powered sculpture race held over Memorial Day weekend across roughly forty-two miles of Humboldt County terrain, from the Arcata Plaza through Eureka and Loleta to a finish in Ferndale. Originated in 1969 by sculptor Hobart Brown, it pits amphibious, all-terrain art vehicles against sand, mud, pavement, and open water crossings.

Its strange engineering-art-sport format is exactly the kind of odd festival Eventisimus should capture.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The race's origin story is genuinely accidental: Hobart Brown modified his son's tricycle into an art vehicle he called the Pentacycle, and when artist Jack Mays challenged him to a race down Ferndale's Main Street in 1969, twelve machines showed up, and a tradition was born almost by dare rather than design

02

The mystery stays covered

The course sets it apart from any conventional race: competitors pilot human-powered machines across sand dunes, mud, a bay crossing, a river crossing, and hills and pavement in one three-day event, a mix organizers call the triathlon of the art world

03

The city starts moving

Brown's own motto, adults having fun so children will want to grow older, captures a spirit of handmade absurdity the race has kept even while becoming Humboldt County's largest single event
