The story

Bat Fest in Austin

Bat Fest brings live music, food, and arts and crafts to the South Congress Bridge area of Austin each August, timed to the nightly emergence of the roughly 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats that roost beneath the Congress Avenue Bridge, and grown from a grassroots gathering started by Austin native French Smith into an established annual celebration of the world's largest urban bat colony.

Its bat-watching hook gives it a distinctly Austin weird/nature identity.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few festivals are built around a wildlife spectacle as dramatic as the nightly emergence of roughly 1

02

The mystery stays covered

5 million Mexican free-tailed bats, whose flight from beneath the Congress Avenue Bridge at sunset can last up to thirty minutes and forms the climax of the festival rather than a side attraction

03

The city starts moving

The bridge became this habitat by accident: a 1980 renovation unintentionally created ideal crevices for the bats, and Austin's decision to protect the resulting colony, now the largest urban bat colony in North America, turned an engineering side effect into a signature attraction

04

The water draws everyone in

Bat Fest's grassroots origin as a small gathering of local bands and craft vendors, rather than a corporate-produced event, has let it keep a homegrown character even as attendance has grown
