Woolly Worm Festival in Banner Elk
Held every October since 1978 in Banner Elk, North Carolina, the Woolly Worm Festival centers on caterpillar races that supposedly forecast the severity of the coming winter based on the color of the woolly worm's thirteen body segments. About 1,200 worms compete in heats, drawing 15,000 to 20,000 spectators to the mountain town each year.
Its quirky insect race identity makes it a classic NC weird event.
