The Apple Butter Festival fills downtown Berkeley Springs each Columbus Day weekend in October with a parade, more than two hundred craft and food vendors, and giant copper kettles of apple butter stirred in the town square. Running since 1974, it is one of West Virginia's largest and longest-running fall festivals.

The Apple Butter Festival began in 1974 in Berkeley Springs, a Morgan County town already known for its historic mineral springs, and it drew on a much older Appalachian tradition of communal apple butter making, in which families and neighbors gathered in autumn to slow-cook cider and apples in large kettles over an open fire until the mixture thickened into a spiced, spreadable preserve that would keep through winter.
