Bisbee 1000: The Great Stair Climb sends participants along a 4.5-mile course through Old Bisbee that connects nine historic staircases totaling more than 1,000 steps. Built by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s to link the hillside mining town's neighborhoods, the stairs now anchor the only outdoor stair-climbing event of its kind in the United States, open to walkers and competitors alike.
