Burning Man in Black Rock City
Burning Man is a week-long large-scale desert gathering focused on community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance, held annually since 1990 at Black Rock City, a temporary settlement built in Nevada's Black Rock Desert about 100 miles north-northeast of Reno. Beginning as a small 1986 gathering on San Francisco's Baker Beach, the event relocated to Nevada's Black Rock Desert in 1990 and now follows ten stated principles including radical self-reliance and leaving no trace.
Burning Man's origins are modest compared to what the event has become.
