The story

Cannon Beach Sandcastle Contest in Cannon Beach

Founded in 1964 to help the community recover after an earthquake-triggered tsunami washed out the Elk Creek Bridge, the Cannon Beach Sandcastle Contest is Oregon's oldest sandcastle competition, drawing thousands to watch elaborate creations on the beach before the evening tide sweeps every sculpture away.

On Good Friday in 1964, a massive earthquake off the coast of Alaska triggered a tsunami that traveled the length of the Pacific coastline, and when it reached Cannon Beach it destroyed the Elk Creek Bridge, a piece of infrastructure the small coastal town depended on.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The contest's origin is tied directly to disaster recovery: after the 1964 Good Friday earthquake generated a tsunami that destroyed the Elk Creek Bridge, four local residents created the contest specifically to lift community spirits and draw visitors back to a town whose infrastructure and economy had just taken a serious hit

02

The mystery stays covered

Six decades later, it remains the first and oldest sandcastle contest in Oregon, staged rain or shine on the beach near Ocean Avenue and Madison Street, and the event's built-in impermanence, the evening tide erasing every sculpture by the following day, gives the single day of viewing a real urgency that a permanent art installation could never replicate
