The story

Ohio Gourd Show in Delaware

The Ohio Gourd Show is an annual free exhibition run by the Ohio Gourd Society, founded in 1946, showcasing thousands of hard-shelled gourds across roughly 60 shapes and sizes. Held the first full weekend of October at the Delaware County Fairgrounds in Delaware, Ohio, the show pairs judged competitions with hands-on demonstrations, craft workshops and a gourd costume contest for growers and visitors alike.

The Ohio Gourd Society organized in 1946 as the Beta Chapter of the American Gourd Society, but did not stage its first public show until October 13, 1963, when members set up 22 judging classes at the Morrow County fairgrounds for an event that drew roughly 500 visitors.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The show's centerpiece is its judged competition, spanning dozens of classes that separate gourds by shape, from long-handled dipper gourds to bulbous birdhouse gourds to small ornamental varieties, alongside a parallel art competition for finished gourd crafts such as carved bowls, painted birdhouses and wood-burned designs

02

The mystery stays covered

A gourd costume contest brings a theatrical, family-friendly counterpoint, with entrants building wearable pieces from gourd shells and fiber

03

The city starts moving

Hands-on demonstrations run throughout the weekend covering gourd cleaning, cutting and finishing techniques, and workshops let visitors leave with a completed craft rather than just raw material bought at a vendor table
