Schmeckfest in Freeman
Schmeckfest is a Mennonite heritage food and arts festival held each March on the Freeman Academy campus in Freeman, South Dakota, running since 1959 and drawing crowds for a volunteer-cooked buffet of dishes like fleisch kuechle and homemade sausage alongside musical theater and craft demonstrations.
Freeman, South Dakota, was settled by Mennonite Germans-from-Russia families in the late nineteenth century, immigrants who brought with them a distinct culinary and cultural heritage that has remained remarkably intact in this corner of southeastern South Dakota.
