South Dakota Chislic Festival in Freeman
The South Dakota Chislic Festival celebrates chislic, cubes of meat deep-fried on a wooden skewer and seasoned with garlic salt, at Freeman's 40-acre Prairie Arboretum each July, honoring a dish rooted in the region's Germans-from-Russia settler heritage since the festival began in 2018 as a community-driven food celebration.
Chislic is not a widely known dish outside a specific pocket of South Dakota, but within that pocket it carries real cultural weight.
