Mike the Headless Chicken Festival in Fruita
Fruita, Colorado spends late May honoring Mike, a Wyandotte rooster who survived 18 months after a 1945 beheading. Held at Fruita City Hall since 1999, the small-town festival mixes fairground fun with the town's strange claim to fame, drawing food vendors, artisans, and thousands of visitors who come to run, eat wings, and toast a bird that refused to die on schedule.
In September 1945, Lloyd Olsen of Fruita, Colorado went out to the yard to kill a young rooster for dinner.
